Where Lava Meets the Sea

"Where the Lava Meets the Sea"recent paintings by Steve IrvineOpening Reception: Saturday, August 8 from 5 to 7 p.m.On Exhibit: August 8 - September 209 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (except Christmas Day)free (park entrance fees apply)

Steve Irvine once again proves himself a versatile artist with his most recent series of paintings of our volcanic coastline. For his "Where Lava Meets the Sea" exhibit, Irvine hiked the Puna coastline looking for land-and-seascapes that met his personal criteria, and found views that say "only on Hawai'i Island" when translated onto his canvases.
Gallery visitors will find his typical long views with high horizons and his judicious use of bright primary colors. He likes to use orange as his under-painting, which gives an interior glow to his paintings. Stylistically, most of them range from Impressionistic backgrounds and blend into Expressionistic foregrounds. Irvine's skillful combination of styles is particularly apt for the extremes in the scenes he has so powerfully depicted for this exhibit.
Irvine's 2004 show at the Volcano Art Center, a collection of semi-abstract surfboard resin collage paintings, was nearly sold out. His work appeals to collectors both for its distinctive quality and for the affordability of his high quality artwork. While he does produce quite large paintings, Irvine manages to keep most of his paintings to a size that will fit into most homes and still give expansive views of his subjects.
Born in California, Irvine came to Hawai'i to attend college, but admits that he was more interested in surfing than studying. He did finish college, however, and has been both surfing and painting ever since. His work has appeared in the annual juried Spring and Fall Arts Festivals at Wailoa Center and East Hawai'i Cultural Center every year he has entered since 1986. His work now hangs in homes throughout Hawai'i, the mainland U.S., and beyond.

WAHI PANA: SACRED PLACES, PAINTINGS AND PRINTS OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDS
Date: June 22 to September 23 2009
Place: Luana Gallery at the Fairmont Orchid, Hawai'i, Big Island
Contact: Kathleen Abood (Featured Artist - Primal Visions Art Studio Gallery), 808.640.0856, Kbabood@yahoo.com
Kona artist, Kathleen Abood presents a solo art exhibition at the Fairmont Orchid, Hawai'i. The Plein Air paintings selected for this solo art exhibition represent twenty years of creating 'on site' land and seascapes while traveling around the Pacific Islands. The plein air or open air painting session begins with a need to simplify visual details with a point of view. As the image develops and the weather changes, the bright tropical sunlight and luminous clouds on the horizon quickly become vivid brush stroke impressions, and the natural elements of the earth, ocean and sky breathe life into the wet paint.

AHI POKE SLIDERS ON MINI BUNS

2# Fresh Ahi poke, from your local fish market
3 Tbsp. macadamia nut oil
8 4" Portuguese sweet rolls

Place ahi poke in the work bowl of a food processor with the metal balde and pulse until poke is ground. Don't overgrind; keep it slightly chunky. Do this in two batches.

Serves 8 - 4" mini burgers.

Buy ultra-fresh poke from your favorite fish market for this recipe. You can use any variation, either sesame or spicy ahi poke makes a great-tasting slider. It's much easier on the home cook to buy delicious island-style poke than to hand-chop 2# of tuna. If you don't want to grill, sear them on the stove using a hot skillet, just don't overcook. If using a grill to cook the sliders, cook tham on a hot pan with oil so they don't fall between the grill gates, or use a grilling basket.

Teak Lotus Panel

Using recycled rough-hewn teak planks from old dwellings and community buildings, hill tribe craftsmen in Thailand devote endless hours to hand-carve, sand, and wax this intricate lotus flower motif. To Thais, the lotus symbolizes prosperity and fertility. Our panels are crafted from reclaimed teak so prized that Thai families make them the centerpiece of a room. Each panel is cut into 12" sections that fit together for ease of shipping and mounting, and comes with recessed hanging hardware. These exquisitely detailed carvings help pay for new community buildings for each village. Each piece is truly unique; variations in wood color and carving will occur. Note: see special shipping information.

Over 30 of the state’s premier chefs are set to dazzle diners during the Taste “grazing” extravaganza. Open to the public 6-8 p.m., Taste features heavy sampling of delectable dishes using local grass-fed beef, pork and lamb—plus a bounty of fresh, island-grown fruit and veggies. True to its roots, Mealani A Taste of the Hawaiian Range continues to showcase Hawai‘i’s agricultural industry by offering two, informative trade-related activities. New this year is a noon seminar presented by the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Kona Kohala Chefs Association. “It’s All About Taste” will delve into the different kinds of locally raised beef, plus explore meat and island-grown fruit parings. MORE IDEAS

You know, there's so many ideas that you can use just to spruce up a room, or even a hallway. Photo prints on the walls are an example. I framed a nice photo taken of my yard with some heliconia plants which I use at the top of my stairway, on one of the walls. With a skylight just over the stairway, brings in sunlight that enhances the photo.
In the corner, I have a planter stand with monstera, raphis palm, and areca palm. Next to it on the wall, is a nice mirror wall hanging.

CREATIVE IDEAS

You can be creative by using different sizes of picture frames on a wall. Just arrange the frames in a design and place them randomly. Think of all of the frames together as being a whole design.
Note: Having the frames ALL ONE COLOR accents the wall.
